“Throughout the years - if you start in the past and work all the way to the present, the history of hip-hop spreads out in every direction. It dates back to the 1920s when the earliest form of hip-hop was invented. The hip-hop culture has proved its resilience over the years, branching across global platforms and beyond.
“Consequently, the hip-hop culture has now found its way to Mzansi aka South Africa, home to beautiful Mother City: Cape Town. The culture in Mzansi, has a versatile structure, a ludicrous approach and a robust spirit. We are sons and daughters of the soil, our aim is focused at a different target, as compared to the rest of the world, we have artist such as: @akaworld, @cassperNyovest and @Scoop makhatini, who consistently push the envelope. We dabble in different trends, maintaining umswenko right from the top leaf to the bottom root within the hip-hop branch.”
“We decided to take the passion to the streets, to have a one on one session with the Modern Poets, our Afro Sisters and Brothers, the Beat Junkies in corners of Newton District, the PTA and Maftown heights, the Kwaito Heads, ground up from the South Hustle Streets to the Mansions Uptown, the MC Kings and Queens in Jozi Central and the Unshaken Passer-by nodding his head to the very same beats.”
“S.A hip-hop is a love affair between Kwaito and American
hip-hop. Its origins go as far as the late 90's, backed by Great Morafe founder, Serai “Stoan” Seate. The likes of word-smiths such as Tumi and The Volume, Amu “Ammunition”, ProVerb, Mr Selwyn and hip-hop group second to none: Skwatta Kamp. The A-list of greats in Mzansi hip-hop has added young talent, bringing in - sharp, edgy competition, an untamed swag fusing vintage disco 70s, action packed 80s and our own pot of Kwaito. Recent upgrades in our rich hip-hop branch, include: Skhanda Rap, and Great Morafe, which incorporates the entire 9 languages into one language.'
