Buffalo Souljah

Born 16 September 1990 in Bulawayo, ZIM
Genre of Music: Reggae/Dancehall/Hip Hop

Who is Buffalo Souljah?

Son of the late, great Zimbabwean saxophonist Unity Ndlovu and born with the name Thabani Ndlovu, he later became known as ‘Buffalo Soulja’ or ‘Big Buff’. Buff composed his first song at the age of eight, and started his first group, Intelligent Racuss Cruuks, in 1996, releasing three afro hip hop albums that were a mix of traditional music called jiti and hip-hop, styled with a hip-hop drum and bass sequence laid over a Zimbabwean instrument known as an mbira.

In 1999 he sought new opportunities in Johannesburg South Africa, putting together a musical outfit called Da Appostles with Ghanaian artists Kweku and Turas and Papszido from Soweto. In 2008 he released his hit dancehall single Bubble Ya Bums for his debut album which won him two Channel O Spirit of Africa Awards in the categories Best Newcomer and Best Dancehall/Ragga, bringing his total to 11 awards in recognition of the role he has played in bringing ragga music to the world.

The man has performed at the White House in the USA, contributing to the One Campaign Project for agricultural awareness in Africa, as part of Bono’s ONE org, and says that if he wasn’t king of African dancehall, he’d probably choose to make a living as a farmer instead. A souljah of many skills, Buff also has a brown belt in karate and is also a former national team basketball pro to boot.
